How to Find an OEM Part Number on Your Vehicle or Auto Part
Learn where to look for an OEM part number, how to tell it from casting and serial numbers, and what to verify before sourcing a replacement.
What an OEM part number tells you
An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part number is an identifier assigned to a component by the vehicle manufacturer or the company supplying that component. It is one of the most useful details you can collect when searching for a replacement because vehicle descriptions alone are often too broad. Two cars with the same year, make, and model may use different parts because of engine size, transmission, body style, production date, trim, drivetrain, or optional equipment.
A matching number can narrow the search, but it should not be treated as the only fitment test. Manufacturers sometimes revise a component, replace an old number with a newer one, or use different numbers for left- and right-hand versions. The number must be considered together with the vehicle identification number (VIN), the part's location, and its physical features.
Start with complete vehicle information
Before looking under the hood or cleaning a label, write down the vehicle year, make, model, and VIN. Also note the engine size, transmission type, body style, drivetrain, and relevant options when known. The VIN is normally visible at the lower edge of the windshield on the driver's side and on the certification label inside the driver's door opening. Registration or insurance documents may also show it.
This information gives context to every number you find. A supplier can use it to determine whether a number belongs to the correct version of a component. For some parts, a production date or option code is as important as the model year. Printed labels and barcodes
Electronic modules, sensors, motors, alternators, lamps, and many assemblies often carry a paper, plastic, or foil label. The OEM number may appear beside words such as Part No., P/N, Part Number, or Assembly. A barcode may encode the same number. Photograph the complete label before wiping it because age, heat, and cleaning products can remove the printing.
Stamped or engraved numbers
Metal brackets, housings, and mechanical components may have characters stamped or etched into a flat machined area. Use a flashlight from the side to make shallow marks easier to read. Remove only loose dirt with a soft brush or cloth. Avoid aggressive sanding, which can erase a faint identifier or damage a reusable surface.
Molded and cast markings
Plastic parts and cast-metal housings frequently have raised or recessed characters formed during manufacturing. These markings are durable, but they are not always the service part number. They may identify the mold, casting, material, engineering design, or one piece of a larger assembly. Record them, but look for another label or tag before assuming you have found the number used to order the complete part.
Packaging and service records
If the original component is inaccessible, check an old parts box, repair invoice, dealer estimate, or service record. These sources can offer a useful lead. Confirm that the record refers to the vehicle and component in question, since invoices may show an aftermarket catalog number rather than the vehicle manufacturer's number.
Part number, casting number, and serial number are different
A component can display several convincing strings of letters and digits. Understanding their roles avoids a common matching error.
- OEM part number: identifies a serviceable component or assembly in the manufacturer's catalog.
- Engineering number: identifies a design or production version and may not be the number used for retail lookup.
- Casting or mold number: usually identifies a raw housing or molded piece that may be shared by several finished assemblies.
- Serial number: identifies one individual unit rather than all compatible units of that type.
- Supplier number: comes from the company that manufactured the component and may cross-reference to one or more OEM numbers.
- Date or batch code: indicates when or where the component was produced.
Labels often place these values close together. Preserve spaces, dashes, prefixes, and suffixes when recording them. A single final letter can represent a revision. Take a clear photo of the entire label rather than copying only the largest number.
A practical OEM number lookup process
1. Identify the complete assembly you need
Decide whether you need an entire assembly or one item attached to it. A door shell, mirror, window regulator, and door control module are separate components even when they arrive together on a donor vehicle. Likewise, a cooling fan motor may have a different identifier from the complete fan and shroud assembly.
2. Inspect and document the original
Photograph the installed location, connectors, mounting points, hose or line connections, and every marking. Include one wide image for orientation and close-ups that make the characters legible. If the part has a left- or right-side position, record it from the perspective of sitting in the vehicle.
3. Search the exact string
Search the full number with punctuation first. If results are limited, try removing spaces or dashes, but do not drop prefixes or suffixes without checking what they mean. Compare results from more than one reliable catalog or source. A search result showing a similar-looking part is evidence to investigate, not proof of compatibility.
4. Check for a superseded number
Manufacturers may discontinue an older number and replace it with a superseding number after a design update or catalog change. The replacement may be backward-compatible, may require related hardware, or may apply only to certain production dates. Ask whether the old and new numbers directly interchange for your VIN rather than assuming that any number in a supersession chain will fit.
5. Compare the candidate part
Check dimensions, mounting tabs, connector shape and pin count, pulley or shaft design, ports, brackets, and orientation. For electronic components, also compare calibration or option codes when applicable. Visible agreement supports the catalog match and can expose a mislabeled part before installation.
Why matching numbers can still produce the wrong part
Some housings are used across several applications and receive different internal components, programming, gear ratios, or attachments. Conversely, two compatible parts may carry different numbers because one is a later revision. Reused components can also have faded labels, donor-yard markings, or tags from a previous repair.
Do not rely only on appearance. Many alternators, control modules, headlight assemblies, mirrors, and pumps look nearly identical while using different connectors or operating specifications. Also avoid relying only on the model year: production changes can occur in the middle of a year. The safest approach combines the exact identifier, VIN-based application information, and a physical comparison.
What to provide when asking about a used replacement
Organizing your information makes an availability check more productive. Have the year, make, model, VIN, engine size, transmission, body style, and drivetrain ready as relevant. Share the OEM number and photos of the original part, including its connector and mounting points. Explain which side or position the component occupies and whether you need a bare component or a complete assembly.
